one of the challenges we uncovered when we were designing nyu/tokyo (a decent virtual world) was the need for a high-speed/low-latency message bus for syncing state between clients. generic federated messaging systems introduce too much latency to be useful. by dropping down to a lower level, we can significantly increase performance and make less decisions on behalf of the app developer.
